HARRISBURG, PA. (AP) -- Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell has apologized for his comment that the Arizona governor is a good choice for Homeland Security secretary because she "has no family."

The remarks were picked up by an open microphone Tuesday at a meeting of the National Governors Association in Philadelphia. Some construed them as sexist.

Rendell said Napolitano is -- quote -- "perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it."

Napolitano has never been married and has no children.

Rendell apologized Wednesday, saying he "didn't mean it the wrong way." But he reiterated that "to do that job, you have to be ready to work 24-7."

A spokeswoman for the Arizona governor says Napolitano considers Rendell a good friend.
