First weekend of firearm deer season brings in the crowds at two local buck poles
There are plenty of of success stories from the first weekend of the season, and bragging about that success is part of the fun.
One place they're doing that is at the buck pole in Kalkaska. The owner of a local sports shop says he's noticing a larger crowd this year than last. Dan Doherty, owner of Jack's Sport Shop, says "it's the under two dollar gas, it's getting them up here." Jack's Sport Shop will mount the head of the winning hunter's deer at this buck pole.
And hunters are stopping by the downtown area in Mancelona to find out how their bucks stack up and of course each buck pole comes with prizes for the biggest catch. Joanie Moore with the Mancelona Chamber of Commerce says, "this year we are seeing an increase of the deer from over last year." This is the 54th year for the buck pole in Mancelona.
