A California man faces multiple charges after deputies say he assaulted an Emmet County resident.

WEST TRAVERSE TOWNSHIP -- Police say that Sunday Jan Van Der Westhulzer, a 27-year-old from San Francisco, was a guest at a home in West Traverse Township when a fight started. Deputies say the Californian left after being asked to by the homeowner, but later came back and hit the homeowner with a hard object. Van Der Westhulzer was arrested and charged with several charges including home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm. If convicted on all counts he faces as many as 44 years in jail. The sheriff says he is in the United States on a work visa from South Africa.
