Some Traverse City companies are looking for new employees despite the economic downturn.

TRAVERSE CITY -- While many businesses are downsizing these days, some are expanding.  In fact, several companies in the Grand Traverse Region looking for employees, one even held a job fair Wednesday to help with hiring.

At One Up Web an online marketing company in Traverse City, CEO, Lisa Wehr says the company is going through an unusual growth spurt and needs more employees.

"We've got positions open for everything from project managers to people on the creative team and programmers, web developers," says Wehr.

When most businesses right now can't afford to host hiring events like a job fair, One Up Web did just that, in order to fill eleven positions.

"The reason this happens is because budgets are being cut in marketing departments so the logical choice for marketing departments that have to continue marketing with less budget is to move it online and that's what we do," says Wehr.

A similar situation is happening at Ameircan Nationwide Mortgage in Traverse City where business owners say they're expanding and looking to hire.

Co-owner of American Nationwide Mortgage, Ken Stevens says the company isn't letting the economic crisis effect their growth.

"We feel with the economy the way it is, there is a job demand for this and we just want to open the door for those experienced people that want to come to a company that I believe we've created to be innovated...We're looking for loan officers, loan originators," says Stevens.

Just down the street at the Michigan Land Use Institute, positions are also open in hopes to create local jobs.

"We're looking for program people and development people...so rather than hunker down and weather the storm, we've made a significant decision to invest where we need to, to build our programs," says Michigan Land Use Institute, executive director, Hans Voss.
