GARFIELD TOWNSHIP -- A family of four lost their home and everything in it after a devastating fire in Garfield Township early Friday.

Firefighters say children in the home woke up just before 4 am and smelled smoke.

Everyone including the family dog got out of the house safely.

Fire crews tell 7 & 4 News that it was difficult to get to the home on Bearcat Trail off of Herschel Road because the driveway was not plowed.

Investigators do not have an exact cause but say flames may have started from a wood stove in the house.

The American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan was called in to help the family.

The home is considered a total loss.
