NORTHERN MICHIGAN -- Northern Michigan residents still dealing with the cold temperatures, although there are some big changes entering the picture late this week into next week.
Once again, many spots dipped back below zero Tuesday night with lake effect snow continuing to drain into parts of Northern Michigan. As is the case with lake effect snow, it has been very localized as to who has seen the most. Locations just south of Suttons Bay in Leelanau County have tallied 14" of snow in the past 36 hours with the highest totals since Sunday coming in between Kalkaska/Mancelona and Alba with upwards of a foot to nearly a foot and a half of fresh snow falling there.
One last weather disturbance will drop in later Wednesday which will lead to a flare-up of lake effect snow along/west of highway US-131 Wednesday later afternoon/evening including spots like Charlevoix/Traverse City/Manistee. As skies clear behind that system Wednesday night, temperatures will freefall as low as -17F at Sault Ste. Marie and some -20F readings likely along the St. Mary's River overnight with below zero readings in much of Northern Lower Michigan.
Temperatures start to modify late this week with 20's by Friday and 30's entering the picture early next week. Although warmer Friday, we are looking at light snow late Thursday night/Friday as a weak weather system arrives. That may touch off 2-4" of snowfall at that time.
