TRAVERSE CITY -- Sad news for local skiers and snowshoers awaiting the fourth annual Winter Trails Day.

The event, which takes place at Timber Ridge Resort in Traverse City, is an event created to help people learn cross-country skiing and snowshoeing for free. It offers free use of the trails, lessons, guided snowshoe hikes, and ends with chili and cookies.

Unfortunately, due to warm temperatures and chances of rain, it has been cancelled this year.

Travis Cole, who runs the Timber Ridge rental shop, said "As a whole we really want to present something well, seeing as how it's all people that are new to the sport. It's a great way to get outside during the winter-but on the other hand of that you don't want to have people come out if the conditions aren't optimal. You don't want to have them show up for the event and leave with a bad taste in their mouth."

Timber Ridge said the trail system is still 100% open due to full coverage of snow, but that not holding Winter Trails Day is preventative planning to stay open and keep people safe.
