TRAVERSE CITY -- More than 5,000 mountain bikers headed to Grand Traverse County Saturday afternoon, putting their pedaling skills to the test for the 23rd annual Iceman Cometh Challenge.

Every year, on the first Saturday of November, cyclists head to Traverse City for the Iceman Cometh Challenge. More than 5,400 racers took part in the event, which takes them from Kalkaska to Traverse City, through 29 miles of hardwood forest, meadows, and ski trails.

Iceman is unique because of the unpredictable weather during November but organizers say the snow and colder temperatures made for perfect conditions this year.

This was the 23rd annual Iceman race, which is the largest one-day mountain bike race in the United States.
