UPDATE: Traverse City Commissioners approve construction funding for a portion of the 2013 street paving and resurfacing projects.
TRAVERSE CITY -- Drivers in Traverse City can look forward to some smoother roads this spring.
Monday night, the Traverse City Commission approved construction funding for a portion of the 2013 street paving and resurfacing projects.
The project is broken up between two phases, and construction should start up in April-June.
Phase One will cost an estimated $610,000 and includes the following streets:
Old Mission Road, from Sheridan Road to North Orchard Drive. The project includes total reconstruction of the pavement including replacing storm infrastructure.
Manor Avenue, from Sheridan Road to East Orchard Drive. The project includes reconstruction of the pavement, replacing water, sewer and storm infrastructure as well as total curb and gutter replacement from South Orchard Drive to Eastern Avenue.
Eastwood Avenue, from Manor Avenue to Eastern Avenue, consisting of a total reconstruction of the pavement including replacing the sanitary sewer and storm infrastructure as well as minor curb and gutter repair.
Sheridan Road, from M-37 to Eastern Avenue, consisting of a total reconstruction of the pavement including replacing the sewer and storm infrastructure as well as minor curb and gutter repair.
Western Street, from East Bay Boulevard to Birchwood Avenue, including construction of pavement including storm infrastructure to replace the existing gravel road.
Phase Two will cost an estimated $710,000 and includes the following streets:
Washington Street, from Barlow Street to Railroad Avenue, consisting of total reconstruction of the pavement including replacing sanitary and storm infrastructure as well as total concrete curb and gutter replacement.
Hope Street, from Washington Street to Front Street, consisting of a total reconstruction of the pavement including replacing the sanitary sewer and storm infrastructure as well as total curb and gutter replacement.
Grove Street, from Rose Street to Grant Street, consisting of construction of pavement to replace existing gravel road.
Fern Street, from the railroad tracks to Hannah Avenue, construction of pavement to replace the existing gravel road.
Cypress Street, from Division Street to Cedar Street, including construction of pavement to replace existing gravel road.
Xavier Street, from Cedar Street to Cypress Street, consisting of the construction of pavement to replace the gravel road.
SID, alley west of Michigan Street, from Webster Street to Walnut Street, including construction of pavement to replace the existing gravel alley.

"Everybody is correct," said Estes. "Their roads, their sidewalks and their curbs are the worst ones, we know that. And that's why we can't sit up here and debate which ones are the worst. We leave that up to the city staff. So, it's a matter of what's gone through the planning commission and engineering as to how that selection is done."
