A pending bill in the House would require salons to be licensed.
MICHIGAN -- Tanning salons in Michigan may be required to register with the state in the near future.
A pending bill in the State House would require tanning parlors to be licensed to operate in Michigan. In addition, all customers would have to sign a consent form stating that they understand the risk of potential UV radiation involved with indoor tanning beds.
Anyone under the age of 18 would need a parent to sign a waiver allowing them to tan, as well.
Similar legislation has been passed in other states and most salon operators aren't concerned.
"I think it's probably safer for everybody. I mean, most tanning salons already do it anyway, so I don't think it would change a whole lot," stated Jessi Miller-LaPlaunt, owner of Sunchaser Tanning.
Health care organizations are promoting the bill as a way to fight skin cancer.
