DETROIT (AP) -- U.S. and Canadian experts are meeting Monday and Tuesday to discuss the latest research about harmful algae blooms in Lake Erie.
The workshop in Windsor, Ontario, is hosted by the International Joint Commission, an agency that deals with issues involving the two nations' shared waterways.
Scientists are putting together papers on topics such as sources of phosphorus in the lake, how to avoid runoff from farms and cities, and how climate change will affect the algae problem.
The commission plans to produce a draft report with recommendations in May. Public meetings to discuss the findings will be held at locations around Lake Erie this summer, and a final report is scheduled for release in September.
Participating scientists are affiliated with government agencies and universities in Michigan and elsewhere.
