TRAVERSE CITY -- An 18 year-old man is dead after stealing a taxi cab in Traverse City and crashing it into a light pole early Saturday morning.

Traverse City Police tell 7&4 News that they got a call at around 2:30am Saturday morning from a taxi cab driver who reported that someone had driven off with his cab.

The cab driver had left the cab parked and running outside of the stretch of popular bars in downtown Traverse City on the 100 Block of South Union Street.

As police were interviewing driver , they received a call of an accident involving a taxi cab in front of the Holiday Inn  off Front Street in Traverse City.

It turns out, it was the same cab that had been stolen from Union Street. The 18 year-old suspect who stole the vehicle lost control while driving on Front street and was ejected from the car after hitting a light pole and fire hydrant. He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The victim's name has not yet been released.
