As we enter the month of January, which is typically our coldest month of the year, the weather actually looks rather quiet.

The primary storm track will be placed north of Lake Superior for the short term, with weak areas of low pressure crossing through every couple days.

None will really stand out, but each weak system could bring an inch or so of snowfall through the middle part of the weekend.

There are indications of a warming trend heading into the early/middle part of next week.

Speaking of snowfall, of the five main climate sites across Northern Michigan - Sault Ste. Marie, Alpena, Gaylord, Traverse City and Houghton Lake - the only one with above normal snowfall for the season is Sault Ste. Marie which is sitting at 52.7" for the season so far, just slightly above the average of 51.2".

In fact, Traverse City has officially only tallied 12.2" on snow, well short of the 34.1" that is more typical by this time of the year.

Alpena has only picked up 13.9", almost half of the normal of 28".
