TRAVERSE CITY -- Parents of a Traverse City West Senior High School student are asking school officials to have a book banned from its shelves.

Heather and Jeff Campbell recently voiced complaints regarding the book "The Glass Castle" written by Jeannette Walls.

The Campbell's 9th grade daughter was assigned the book as a part of her freshman honors English course. When she started reading the book, she would use words like "creepy" and "disturbing" to describe it, Campbell says.

So the father read the book himself and says "The Glass Castle" used inappropriate language, and referenced violence and sexual molestation.

He and his wife immediately went to TCAPS administrators, requesting it to be removed from 9th, 10th and 11th grade curriculum.

"I was shocked," Jeff Campbell said. "I really thought about myself as a 14 year old and I just don't remember ever even hearing those words at 14."

The Campbell's said they researched the book and found that it is, what they call, and adult book.

"It's won adult awards, but is not for 13 and 14 year olds by any means." he said.

In the end of November, TCAPS Curriculum Committee recommended that the book be removed from the 9th grade required summer reading list.

And tonight, TCAPS Board members will weigh in on the topic at their scheduled board meeting.

7&4 News will be at the meeting tonight and will bring you the latest.
