TRAVERSE CITY -- Cherry Knoll Elementary School's 2nd and 3rd grade girls basketball coach was fired after leaving students in the care of a registered sex offender.

In an email that was sent from Principal Chris Parker to parents and staff, Principal Parker said he observed the coach leaving the gym briefly and leaving the team under the supervision of her spouse. Parker says he later confirmed that the spouse's name was listed on the Michigan Sex Offender Registry.

Parker says on Saturday he filed a police report.

The coach has been removed from the team for leaving students under the supervision of a non-coach, Parker says. He goes on to say that the parent listed on the sex offender registry will be sanctioned by the school to restrict his access to students.

Parker said he will be in direct contact with the parents of students on the teams throughout the day today to discuss scheduling and answer any questions that may arise.

Parents with questions can contact Principal Parker at 933-8942.
