MT. PLEASANT -- A Central Michigan University professor has been suspended after it was announced that he is the subject of a child pornography investigation, according to a press release from the university.

William Merrill, a professor in the College of Education and Human Services, was charged Thursday with four felony counts, WOOD-TV reports.

The investigation was launched after authorities received a tip from someone who said they saw child pornography on Merrill's university issued computer, WOOD-TV reports.

Merrill, a tenured professor, was placed on leave Monday. He has also been banned from the campus for the duration of the investigation, the university says.

CMU Police have assured university leaders there is nothing to suggest anyone on campus is in any danger.
