A local artist uses quilling to make mod paper jewelry and fine art
TRAVERSE CITY -- They're called Little Circles, but they provide a lot for the Curet family.
"I can do it while spending time with family, they can be working on different things, my husband works on the website all the time while I work," Erin Curet said. "It's just amazing."
Troy Curet, Erin's husband, is proud of how his wife has been able to turn something she loves to do into a business.
"It's incredible to see somebody's passion come to life and then also have it support her as well," Troy said.
Erin Curet is a local artist who specializes in quilling. She makes mod paper jewelry and fine art.
"It's wrapping paper around different forms and piecing it together in really cool designs and securing it, and then I hand varnish each one to make it durable," Erin said.
Making and selling her jewelry has allowed Erin to work from home, but now she will be able to work from anywhere in the country.
Erin and her family are hitting the road this week to travel around the United States for one year.
"We're just going to go for it and try it, I think it's worked so far, it's worked the last couple of shows and it's been amazing, so we're just going to go for it!" Troy said.
Erin said she is looking forward to traveling with her family on the road.
"Needs are pretty low. We need gas and we need food and that's really it. So on this trip we have planned out different festivals and flea markets around the country. It pays for the whole month and allows us to continue to travel all around the country, and I'm so excited!"
"We travel together as a family and all four of us participate, it's equally weighted for sure," Erin said.
Erin and Troy's 6-year-old son, Ethan, said he really likes his job.
"I get to play, I get to know more people and I get to maybe get some Pokemon cards."
Their 8-year-old daughter, Marnie, likes to help out as well.
"My job is first wrapping the earrings in tissue paper, then I put it in a white bag and put our card on the back and staple it."
Erin said her artwork will soon be in the local spotlight.
"We met the editor from Traverse Bay Family magazine and she actually liked my art so much they're turning it into the cover of their fall issue."
These Little Circles pay the bills and Troy hopes their kids can learn from their mom's success.
"Just to show them that anything is possible, that they can really rely on themselves to create the world that they want to live in, to give them that is a true gift."
