TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City leaders are looking at banning fireworks after noise complaints rise.
The amendment to the Traverse City Code of Ordinances would ban consumer-grade fireworks within the city limits at all times other than three days surrounding a national holiday.
Governor Snyder signed a law in December that would allow more powerful fireworks to be sold in Michigan. In January it became legal to sell and use explosives such as firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles. Previously, all fireworks that left the ground were illegal.
Allowing the consumer-grade fireworks will boost the tax revenue in the state. Some predict the extra cash flow could be in the 8 to 10 million dollar range. The money will be used to help fund fire departments statewide.
The Traverse City Commission will meet Monday at 7pm to discuss the amendment. The meeting will take place at the Governmental Center.
