GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY -- Grand Traverse Metro fire crews are busy Sunday, fighting an extremely large woodchip and tree fire at a business in Garfield Township.
The fire started around 7:30 Saturday night, right behind Leonardo's Tree Service off US 131, on Polaris Crescent Drive.
After battling the fire all night, the Michigan DNR Wildlife Service and fire crews were still on the scene Sunday, bulldozing a fire line and securing the fire perimeter.
Right now fire officials are working on a plan to fully extinguish the fire. The fire is contained but is still burning deep within the wood-chip pile and it could burn for weeks.
Officials say the cause of the blaze was spontaneous combustion.
Grand Traverse Metro Fire Chief Pat Parker says if this fire was left to itself, it could burn for an entire month. Crews will remain on the scene until the fire is completely out, which could take up to 2 weeks.
