LEELANAU CO. -- Time is running out for a proposed bill that would help many farmers across the country including right here in Northern Michigan.
Friday Senator Debbie Stabenow, who drafted the legislation, met with Michigan farmers at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station.
Congress passes agriculture legislation every five years known as the Farm Bill. It sets national farming, nutrition, and conservation policies.
The 2012 version that the senator has been working on eliminates several programs she says are not needed anymore.
Senator Debbie Stabenow, (D) Michigan, says, "We eliminated subsidies that actually have paid farmers for things they dont grow anymore which makes no sense. We turned it over to crop insurance to help farmerrs when they have a loss like we've seen this year."
The Senate has already passed the 2012 bill in June, but the US House has not taken it up leaving farmers worried as the expiration date looms in September.
