A northern Michigan village won't merge with a surrounding township after voters in the Manistee County communities rejected the proposal.

Voters in Onekama (on-EHK'-uh-muh) and Onekama Township turned down the proposal Tuesday. A two-thirds majority was needed to approve the plan, and the total was 340 in favor and 305 opposed.

The vote was 254-166 in favor of the merger among township residents and 139-86 against among village residents.

The plan would have created a single unit of government. The village and township are in the northern Lower Peninsula, about 40 miles southwest of Traverse City.
