Northern Michigan soldier injured in Afghanistan

A soldier from Northern Michigan was injured in Afghanistan on Wednesday.

29-year-old Staff Sgt. Robert Drebenstedt of Charlevoix was injured by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. Drebenstedt is a part of the 1433rd Engineer Company, which was deployed in May for a one-year mobilization.

Drebenstedt was on patrol when the IED was detonated. Also injured was Spec. William Barnett of Ypsilanti, Spec. Steven Nelson of Dollar Bay and Pvt. Joshua Colon of Grand Rapids. 25-year-old Spec. Kyle McClain of Shelby Township was killed in the incident.

According to Capt. Aaron Jenkins, State Affairs Officer for the Michigan National Guard, the soldiers were transported to military medical facilities at the Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan for treatment.

The soldiers conditions are being evaluated for return to, or release from military duty.
