MANISTEE -- The families of the soldiers of Bravo Troop 1-126th CAV of the Michigan Army National Guard are trying to raise money for a big welcome home celebration!
About eighty soldiers are currently deployed to Afghanistan - this is the unit's third deployment and they are due back in the fall.
The Bravo Troop's FRG is holding a garage sale (an entire gym full of stuff!) and a cookout (hot dogs, chips, soda, etc.) at the Manistee Armory through Saturday. The sale starts at 10am each day. Since they are still accepting items, not only can you donate your things for a good cause, but you can pick up something new at the same time - and this also means new things are available each day of the sale.
The families spent hours sorting all of the items, so one can easily walk into the armory gym and go to the section of things they are interested in (books, clothes, dishes, etc.).
The goal of the FRG is to raise enough money for the soldiers to have a nice dinner at Little River Casino, and engraved belt buckle, and a night's stay in a hotel.
So far, they have raised $4,000 - the goal is $15,000.
Can't make it to the sale? They're also holding the first annual Running For Our Soldiers 5K run and 1mile walk. That event is August 25th and is $25 (includes a T-shirt and goodie bag).
