The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for public input on proposed forest management treatments for 2014.
The DNR will be hosting an open house Wednesday night in Indian River and Thursday night in Gaylord to discuss their plans for managing the forests of Northern Michigan.
Each year, the DNR evaluates one-tenth of the state forest to learn about the health, quality and quantity of the vegetation, wildlife, minerals, archeological sites, among other things. This years proposed treatments include cutting down trees, replanting and other management techniques. They are designed to ensure sustainability of the ecosystem.
Those interested in learning more or participating in a discussion with DNR officials can attend one of the open houses.
The first will be held Wednesday afternoon from 3:00-7:00 pm at the DNR Indian River field office (6984 Wilson Road, Indian River). It will discuss the proposed treatments in Cheboygan and Emmet Counties.
The next meeting will be Thursday afternoon from 3:00-7:00pm at the DNR offices in Gaylord (1732 West M-32, Gaylord). It will discuss treatments in Antrim, Charlevoix and Otsego Counties.
The formal review to decide on the treatment plans will take place on Thursday, July 12.
