Michigan lawmakers are voting today on two measures that would take more steps to ban synthetic marijuana.

It's a mix of dried herbs and spices sprayed with chemicals that create a high similar to marijuana.

The state has already outlawed certain chemicals that makeup K-2 or Spice, and it is a 90 day misdemeanor to possess it. Manufacturers are now simply changing the chemical makeup in order to skirt the state law that bans certain ingredients.

The Traverse City Police Department says they're well aware of what's out there, and are dealing with a spike in the number of calls relating to it. It's led to reports of strange behaviors and serious medical emergencies.

Lawmakers are working to get ahead of the every changing recipe of the substance. A set of bills would give The Michigan Department of Community Health the authority to ban everything that poses a risk to residents as a controlled substance.

The bills could be ready for Governor Rick Snyder to sign by next week.
