Cherry crop loss means banks will have to help growers

Some farmers will need assistance to make up for profit loss

LEELANAU CO. -- There's an effort growing to get financial help for the farming community that may lose a seasons work.This is a story 7&4 News has been following closely all spring after erratic weather wiped out this year's cherry blossoms.

Monday we found out that the crop is expected to take a severe hit and local processors will likely have little or no work this summer. 

Now work is being done on the state and federal level to develop an assistance plan with local banks.

7&4's Lauren Amstutz spoke with Black Star Farms Proprietor Don Coe and Doug Deyoung with the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce to find out when cherry businesses could see loans.
