TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- There are new efforts being made in northern Michigan to help find permanent homes for America’s homeless veterans.
The Departments of Housing and Urban Development estimates there are more than 67,000 homeless veterans living in the United States.
In the last month, Bay Hill Apartments, in Traverse City, has taken in six homeless veterans.
The complex is accepting vouchers that cover veteran's rent and utilities.
The program is operated by the Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program (VASH), which is a subsidy of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
According to the Department, HUD has awarded funding for approximately 10,000 HUD-VASH vouchers each year in 2008, 2009 and 2010. There is at least one site in each of the 50 states, in the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. In 2011, $50 million was appropriated to serve approximately 7,000 voucher families.
