LANSING, MI -- The Michigan Senate K-12 Appropriations Subcommittee approved increasing school funding for the 2012-2013 school year.
Based on the 2x funding formula, schools at the lowest levels of funding would receive an additional $208 per student, and schools with more funding would receive $104 more per pupil.
The additional funding will be taken from money that's currently used for performance-based funding and retirement funds.
The Senate is also looking to eliminate funding for the MEAP tests and hopes to replace them with a computer-adaptive test which will save $8.7 million every year.
State Senator Howard Walker, a republican from Traverse City, chairs the committee and sees this is a step in the right direction to address the problem of inequitable school funding.
