Convicted sex offender is caught along Southbound I-75

KINCHELOE, MI -- An inmate escaped the Chippewa Corrections Facility Wednesday.

According to prison officials, 52 year-old Philip Malugen escaped from the Level 2 security prison just after noon.

Malugen was captured by police shortly after his escape.  He was arrested along Southbound I-75 in Chippewa County.

According to the Michigan Department of Corrections website, Malugen is serving a life sentence for Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree, an assault in which he also used a weapon.  The offense happened in Oakland County in 1987.

Wednesday afternoon, prison officials did an emergency count of all inmates and all are accounted for. 

How Malugen escaped is still under investigation.
