TRAVERSE CITY, MI -- Last week, 7&4 News put our viewers to the test, asking if they knew why Americans vote on Tuesdays.

We were not surprised when they didn’t know. After all, the answer goes back to accommodating farmers in 1840.

However, the issue has made headlines in recent years as organizations, like Why Tuesday?, push to move Election Day to the Weekend in an effort to increase voter participation.

Curious what Republican candidates thought, we asked them about voting on Tuesday and increasing voter participation.

“I have no idea (why we vote on Tuesday)…each state, the people of the state are able to make the decision on how they want to vote…some states have very substantial absentee ballot programs. Michigan is one of those….but perhaps the most effective way is to have people confident the person running will actually change things in Washington,” Mitt Romney said.

In previous interviews, Santorum was unable to explain why Americans vote on Tuesday. However, he did say that he is willing to do whatever it takes to increase voter participation.
