An organizaation is hoping to build a new facility to protect dogs and cats in need of a loving home.

KALKASKA -- The Kalkaska County Animal Shelter is in dire need of a new facility and they're asking for your help.

Northwoods Animal Coalition is planning an event called "Raise the Woof", a dinner and dance party to earn money for a new shelter building.  Organizers say the current shelter is not big enough. They say cats are having to be kept in cages-- while some dogs are spending days outside in the snow and cold.

"Depending on how this fundraiser catches on they may want to continue to raise enough money to just complete the entire new building project which would be great if it happens but it would also be great just to put that existing roof outside there to give the animals some shelter," explained Kalkaska Co. Sheriff David Israel.

The fundraiser for the animal shelter is Sunday, Feb. 26 at Whitetails Steak & Ale in Kalkaska.  It runs from 4-8pm and includes a buffet and silent auction.

The cost is $10 per person with children five and under eating free.
