Garfield Township OKs two liquor licenses
GRAND TRAVERSE CO. -- Two more businesses in Grand Traverse County's Garfield Township will soon be able to start serving alcohol.
Because of a growing population, the township earned two new liquor licenses from the state, something several area businesses want to get their hands on.
The township board reviewed four applications before making a decision.
Opa! Coney and Grill at the Cherryland Center and Flap Jack Shack on US 31 will be able to sell alcohol in the next 60 to 90 days.
Flap Jack will be able to hire an additional 22 jobs with the license. While they are known for their breakfast, the restaurant plans to expand their dinner menu.
Opa has plans to add three full time positions and hope the alcohol will draw in much needed business to the Cherryland Center. It will offer Polish beers and vodka, Greek wines, and support local vineyards.
Spaghetti Jim's, a wholesale pasta maker with a new cafe on South Airport, and Loco Burrito were denied a liquor license by the township.
Both businesses say they're disappointed and that selling alcohol would have made expanding much easier.
