Results of the Michigan Educational Assessment Program test, or MEAP were released Wednesday.

State officials say Michigan elementary and middle school students general improved scores in math and reading this year.

Locally, 3rd through 8th graders at Traverse City Area Public Schools, Petoskey Public Schools, and Cadillac Area Public Schools, each scored above the state average in reading.

TCAPS was on par with state averages for writing, social studies, and science but the district's math scores in every grade were significantly lower than the averages of students in Michigan.

Cadillac schools also scored poorly in math.

Petoskey Public Schools had proficiency scores above the state average in every subject.

The scores this year are more difficult to compare to previous years because of a tougher grading scale adopted this year by the state.
