LAKE ANN, MI -- The Michigan Department of Education has selected two Benzie County Central Schools for the state’s list of Distinguished Schools for “Exceptional Student Performance.”

It was announced this week that Lake Ann Elementary and Crystal Lake Elementary were among the top seven Title I schools in Michigan.

The schools were selected by comparing the ranked lists of proficiency in both English language arts and mathematics over a two-year period. State analysis found that the schools’ students posted a significant increase in both areas from 2009-10 to 2010-11.

“It is always nice to be recognized for a job well done…based on our risk factors…we are doing better than what is expected...and we know that! But now it is like the state knows,” said Lake Ann Elementary Principal Gail Wheeler.

In March, school leaders will be formally recognized at the School Improvement Conference in Lansing.
