TRAVERSE CITY -- A local fireman's passion for helping others has grown into something the whole neighborhood can enjoy.

Nate McKerchie is a firefighter and paramedic for Traverse City and lives in a neighborhood off of Garfield Avenue. He spent more than 100 hours building a 100 foot long and 30 foot wide ice rink.

McKerchie says his father is the person who inspired him to build the community ice rink.

"It's been a labor of love and I guess when you love doing something for somebody else and everybody else,  the hours don't seem to matter so I'm out here in the wee hours of the morning just like I'm sure my dad is right now up in the U.P.  doing the same thing.  I do it for everybody else to enjoy."
