TRAVERSE CITY -- A group of middle school exchange students from Japan got a behind the scenes look at the United States Coast Guard.

The tour of Air Station Traverse City was a part of Michigan's Sister State Program with Shiga, Japan. The students checked out a Coast Guard helicopter, equipment and also had a chance to witness some life saving techniques used by the crew.

The students will be staying in the Traverse City area for a week as part of the exchange program with Traverse City Area Public Schools.  The program aims to promote understanding and friendship between Japanese and American middle school students.

Students have been taking part in the exchange since 2006.
