Red Ribbon Campaign may not kick off in TC

TRAVERSE CITY -- This is usually the time of year where the community hangs red ribbons on cars, urging people to not drink and drive. This year they may not make their way to Traverse City.

You many not have realized it, but Mothers Against Drunk Driving no longer has a chapter in Grand Traverse County. For local MADD volunteers it’s becoming increasingly difficult to raise awareness for their cause.

Monica O'Brien witnessed a drunk driver crash into her mother's car, killing her in 2003. Even though local courts pay her to speak to people convicted of a DUI, the money she makes goes to MADD Michigan in Troy. It's actually the only MADD chapter left in Michigan.

O'Brien says, "It seems like we're having a more difficult time getting ribbons because we've been down sized. We don't have the funding locally here to do our own thing."

MADD spokesperson, Pam Gill, tells 7&4 News that it is up to the organization's board of directors to work with state officials in deciding where they should be more visible. She added that it also has a lot to do with funding.

MADD Michigan is currently looking for new leadership; it’s on the hunt for a new executive director.
