This weekend and next, new songs will be created at the Birchwood Inn
HARBOR SPRINGS, MI -- Songwriters from across the state and even from out of state are in Harbor Springs this weekend to create new songs.
Lamb’s Retreat for Songwriters is a yearly event.
"I decided to put together something creative that would inspire me creatively, but also others," explains Lamb’s Retreat Director John D. Lamb.
For 17 years, the Birchwood Inn has been the songwriting Mecca in Northern Michigan. Songwriters from all over meet here for a four day retreat to take a given topic and make it into a song.
“Hundreds of songs have been written here at the Birchwood Inn, and we're excited to get it started, everyone's a little nervous about their assignment," said Lamb.
The theme this year is they must write a song about the place where they live. Assignments were handed out today.
This is the first year Adolph Cwik has done this retreat.
"I’m a songwriter, and when I heard about it, it sounds like a lot of fun because you're with a lot of songwriters over the weekend," said Cwik.
His assignment is to write about where he's from, which is East Jordan, and tell an outsider what's made at East Jordan Iron Works. He has until Sunday to create the song.
"I’m going to try to use as much as he's given to me and try to make it melodic and something people want to sing," said Cwik.
And by Sunday, who knows, one of the songs created here could be the next big hit.
The songs will be performed on Sunday.
The conference also runs next weekend for others who are interested.
On Saturday, there's a concert with some well-known performers at the Birchwood Inn. The public is invited to attend and the cost is $15 to get in.
