TRAVERSE CITY -- When it comes to distance events, runners around Traverse City have had the Bayshore races in the spring, but nothing to train for in the fall season.
So when rumors swirled that a half marathon was in the works for October 23d, there was a lot of optimism. But that faded Monday night, as Traverse City officials did not approve plans for the fall race.
When the word of the race got out about a year ago, backlash immediately followed. It's all surrounding the event's organizer, Dean Reinke from Reinke Sports Group, which is based in Florida.
Early on, many local organizations opted out of participating in the race. Why? Because they say Reinke has a reputation and a track record that they want nothing to do with.
