Volunteers leaving to help tornado victims
TRAVERSE CITY -- Families down south are beginning to pick-up the pieces. Tornadoes ripped through hundreds of homes, buildings, churches, and schools leaving hundreds dead last week.
Kevin Bavers, Director of Red Cross of Northwest Michigan says, "This disaster is tremendous. It is probably the largest since Katrina so this is quite devastating to the entire south."
Since last week's storms, Red Cross chapters across the nation have sprung into action.
Bavers says, "Providing food, water, a safe warm place. Our vehicles have been out in the field going door to door to help people."
Tuesday, three volunteers from the Northwest Michigan chapter will leave for Little Rock Arkansas.
Misty Youngson, an AmeriCorps Volunteer says, "Can I go, can I serve? That's what I've been asking the Red Cross. It is what I want to do."
Youngson will be working one-on-one with tornado victims as a caseworker. She will travel throughout Arkansas to the cities impacted the most.
Youngson says, "I’ll be assessing their needs, determining what we can do to help them whether it is financial assistance, referral or just providing emotional comfort."
