FRANKFORT -- A horse involved in a severe abuse case in Benzie County is recovering,  while the person charged with the crime serves jail time.

In the fall of 2010, officials were notified about farm animals being abused in Frankfort.  When authorities arrived they found a cow and a Belgium horse with tow chains embedded in their necks.

The cow was put down immediately due to the severe injuries.  A veterinarian and animal control officer removed the chain from the horse's neck and "Jim" the horse began his long road to recovery.

"Jim" was placed in a foster home where he received medical care, food and love.  He is doing well and has gained more than 1,000 pounds.

The Animal Welfare League of Benzie County paid more than $2600 to care for Jim.

Larry Coombs of Frankfort, was sentenced in late January for the animal abuse.

His sentenced included 2 years probation, 90 days in jail, restitution to the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County for payment of medical cost and care, court costs.

Coombs is also banned from owning any farm or domestic animals.

The pictures show the severity of the injuries but also the recovery of Jim.   **Some of the pictures are disturbing.
