TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City Area Public Schools will be closed Monday, January 17 in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
The district announced in September last year that schools would be closed on MLK Day after considering it for several months.
Filmmaker and Traverse City Film Festival Founder Michael Moore offered to raise money to upgrade seats in Central Elementary School's Lars Hockstad Auditorium if the district observed King's birthday by closing schools on the national holiday.
Glen Lake Community Schools and the charter Woodland School and Traverse City College Preparatory Academy also will close to honor King.
Cadillac Area Public Schools, Gaylord Community Schools and Public Schools of Petoskey will all be open on MLK Day.
Do you think schools should be closed for Martin Luther King Day? Or should students stay in class and learn about his legacy?
