(AP) -- ANN ARBOR - Student submarine races will help mark the launch of the Naval Engineering Education Center. The University of Michigan-led program aims to train the next generation of naval systems engineers. Events Monday in Ann Arbor include high school students and incoming freshmen racing underwater robots.

The center is geared toward building the Navy's ship design expertise. It will involve 15 colleges and universities along with the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The center was established through a $3.2 million contract from the Naval Sea Systems Command.
