TRAVERSE CITY -- For more than 166 years, it’s been known by four letters, Y.M.C.A.
Now that is changing.
The nation’s most recognized family fitness center is undergoing a major rebranding. It will now be called “the Y”, a nickname many people already use. The new brand was unveiled over the weekend at a national convention in Salt Lake City. Branch leaders from across the country attended including the CEO of Traverse City’s “Y”.
The goal of this new brand is to reflect how far the nonprofit organization has come.
Grand Traverse Bay YMCA CEO, Tom Vandeines says, "We have kids from infant all the way up to 90 year olds playing tennis we cover everybody with programming here at the Y.M.C.A. We're for all."
The Grand Traverse Bay Y.M.C.A. is also in the process of relocating to a site on Silver Lake Road. Its current building is run down and is actually sinking into the swamp it’s built near. The $12 million dollar project should break ground in about two years.
