CHEBOYGAN, MI -- A plan to tear down a historic building in downtown is moving forward.
The Cheboygan City Council voted unanimously last night to formally approve an application for a block grant.
The more than $439,000 grant is from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
The money would go toward tearing down the former store and building a public pavilion in its place.
"Unfortunately, we'd love to have it in the private sector for tax purposes, but there just wasn't anything available, and it seemed to be important on everyone's list that this was a detriment to downtown and we're hoping soon we can get rid of it, the sooner we can recover, a little quicker," said Mayor Richard Sangster.
The mayor hopes that all of the hard work to remove the building will pay off with the end result, and attract people to the city.
Plans have the pavilion area being host to a farmer's market, car shows, outdoor festivals, and ice skating in winter.
