CASPIAN -- More details are coming out about the murder-suicide in Iron County over the weekend. Police say Kathleen Cronkright was shot by her former boyfriend, Antonio Rombola, on Saturday night at her home in Bates Township.
Cronkright died from her injuries at Northstar Health System. Rombola then barricaded himself in his home at 201 West First Street in Caspian.
After a nine hour standoff, police found Rombola dead in his basement from a gunshot wound.
Police officers from agencies across the state, including two blackhawk helicopters and a K-9 team were brought in to help.
Neighbors said they heard the activity including what sounded like gun shots Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Police shot several holes through the windows to establish lines of communication. This is the second murder-suicide in Iron County over the last four months.
“We were able to pull together with the Iron River Police Department, the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department and others to provide a thin blue line and maintain public safety here,” said Michigan State Police 1st Lieutenant and Post Commander Chris Shoelander. “It's a sad story and it's not one that I want to tell again.”
Rombola had a 13-year-old daughter living with him, however, she was not home at the time of the incident.
