It's one of the busiest intersections in Northern Michigan and some very frustrated drivers say too many accidents and close calls make it one of the most dangerous ones. They wanted to know what could be done by MDOT to make it safer. The answer is the subject of this Fact Finder.

Lynn Larr drives though the intersection of M 115 and 37 east of Mesick almost everyday. A recent trip though sticks out in her memory and motivated her search for a solution.  As Larr explains "Well I ended up half way in the ditch because a semi that was in front of me had to slam on his breaks because a charter bus pulled right out in front of me. He couldn't stop. Luckily he didn't crash and I wasn't hurt either but it really upset me."

And Lynn Larr isn't alone in being frustrated by this intersection.  As it turns out the blinking stop light in one direction and flashing yellow in the other has been a concern for the village of Mesick for years. Trustee David Clous has spent his entire life in and around the area, and spent years trying to come with a new plan to ease the traffic concerns.  Trustee Clous affirms "I have been on the council about 15 years and we have been concerned with it at least all that time." 15 years at least of what Clous and Larr say are concerns and close calls.  As Larr says it’s not a seasonal thing. It doesn't only happen in summer when traffic volume maybe heavier. As she sees it "everyday, everyday there is somebody that's had a problem at this corner everyday, whether it’s been an accident or just a close call, people just don't take any time."

If you haven't driven though it here is the set up; a yellow blinker for through traffic on M 115 and red flasher and a stop sign for folks headed south on M 37.  But the problem according to Larr and Clous is too many drivers just roll right through.  While speaking with Larr at the intersection, she claims to have counted 25 rolling stops in about 15 minutes.

Larr and Clous say the flasher overhead and the 55 mile an hour speed limit have proven in the past and will continue to be a deadly combination. For years they have said a something needs to be done.  Clous says a good start would be "to get a red yellow green traffic light where the traffic on M 37 has to stop and not to a roll through like of them do."  Larr seconds that thought and wonders why MDOT hasn't done anything to fix what she says is a problem.

So I contacted MDOT about the possibility of adding a traditional stop light. They told me they had looked at the intersection recently and they say according to their numbers like car volumes and crashes, a signal isn't warranted.  If they added one, "more rear end collisions can occur making a situation even worse. Furthermore, a signal that operates 24/7 in an area that only has peak periods of heavy traffic will not improve the flow or enhance safety." While MDOT didn't rule out changes in the future, they cited pressing funding concerns so in the meantime MDOT's advice is “drivers have to do their part too and make good choices when navigating roadways and intersections. Good behavior should be expected but their are numerous examples of poor behavior."

So what do you think? Is this intersection a tough one? Do you know of one that is worse?

Traffic Lights aren't necessarily the right fix for the M-115/M-37 intersection

Posted by Michael Green, Cadillac - Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 11:45 a.m.

Yes, this is a dangerous intersection and something must be done, but traffic lights can actually cause more accidents in some cases. MDOT installed a stop and go light in place of a flashing light at M-115 at 13th Street in Cadillac several years ago. Yet, it remains a very dangerous intersection, with several fatalities and many more injuries, mostly due to people running red lights. In addition, the lights on M-115 cause tseveral mile-long backups on summer and holiday weekends. I believe that intersection should be changed to a roundabout (like many similar state highway intersections are nowadays) or reconfigure the intersection to make M-115 east flow directly into M-37 north and make M-115 traffic coming from Mesick and Frankfort stop at the intersection. Additionally, I do agree with many that police should patrol this intersection more frequently and crack down on drivers who run the stop signs.

Scary....

What really scares me now after reading all the posts here, i see how many people who think MDOT can fix an issue that involves Your Driving. Get off your Cell Phone, stop distracting yourself while behind the wheel of a vehicle. (All Vehicles) Quit being in a hurry, be patient and courteous. I'm 47 years old, been driving cars since i was 15, and mini bikes, motorcycles, go karts, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, i could go on, with no accidents. Experience and attention are needed while navigating our highways and trails. Now please, the Holidays are upon us, BE SAFE. Bob Out.

M-155 & M-37

Posted by Frank Guerin, Traverse City - Friday, November 20, 2009 at 6:04 a.m.

The biggest problem with the intersection of M-115 and M-37 is not the signal, but the impatience of the drivers. When drivers are rolling through the flashing red light, it's a matter of enforcement. When drivers turning left (east) onto M-115 from M-37 (south), the driver must wait to make sure that he / she can see all cars including the one's hidden by the car turning right (north) onto M-37 from M-115. This is the same problem at 3 Mile & Garfield.

More Traffic Signal is not the solution, as they slow traffic and increase fuel waste with Stop-And-Go.

Mdot is what needs fixing...

all these people who tell other's to deal with the problem, or be more responsible. and it's not MDOT's fault. well who's responiblity is it? why do we pay taxes? MDOT didn't ever answer the question, what dose it take to get a traffic light? what are the rules? you can be the BEST driver in the world and some idot who thinks their a good driver can change your world ( like it did me, at that corner) a traffic light IS NEEDED why can't there be one? AND WHY CAN'T MDOT OR THE ROAD COMMISION ANSWER THAT QUESTION? I for one whould really like to know what it takes to get one.

Who is at fault?

Posted by k b, Northern Michigan - Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 12:38 p.m.

I just watched your news about the intersection at M-37. I am hear to tell you...the more you expect out of MDOT or the road commission to sign is ridiculous...Where does the fault become the driver and not paying attention? Why must the fault always become MDOT's problem or the road commission? It is always soooooo easy to blame someone other than yourself. Get real and take responsibility people!

STOP

Posted by Larry Jacobs, Munising - Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 12:00 p.m.

If drivers don't stop for a stop sign, they are not going to stop for a traffic light. But, if Mesick wants a light, they can make some noise and offer to pay for it. That's what we did to get a traffic light in Munising.

Posted Detour

Posted by J Van, Baxter - Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 10:08 a.m.

In addition to the usual traffic, this is a posted detour for traffic heading to South US 131 due to the bridge work at the Manistee River. This detour is scheduled to be in effect until at least the end of May 2010. This is causing more heavy traffic at this intersection.
I have seen temporary traffic lights in TC, why can't MDOT at least try a temporary light at this intersection?
Another dangerous intersection is the corner of Cass & So Airport Rd. The left turn light on S Airport has been changed to a blinking yellow arrow. Last week was my first time through this intersection (sinced tghe change), heading east on S Airport Rd - did not know that when the light for the lane heading east turns red that the light for the lane heading west remains green & almost turned into oncoming traffic. That blinking arrow needs to change to red sooner.

deal with it

Posted by scott smith, rogers city - Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:13 a.m.

I lived downstate for a long time and bad intersections were a dime a dozen. People need to learn to deal with it and stop complaining. There was a accident every day out front of were I worked.

Dangerous Intersections...

Posted by J B, Traverse City - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:24 p.m.

The M37 and M115 intersection can be quite dangerous especially with drivers not obeying basic laws of driving. However, there is another very dangerous intersection on US 131 - the Walloon Lake Junction. This intersection is dangerous because the traffic on 131 does not stop and is 55mph (or faster). Most people coming out of the Junction are turning left onto 131 towards Petoskey but they can't see because of the hills there and the oncoming turning traffic. My dad has been in two accidents at that intersection due to someone pulling out in front of him. Ironically, the collision center that is located at that corner has expanded over the years.
I think drivers need to pay more attention versus expecting lights to fix everything.

dangerous intersection

Posted by colleen smith, cadillac - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:16 p.m.

I personally have not seen any near misses or accidents at this corner, however i can believe that they do happen. as it gets busier at that intersection, like so many other busy intersections, i believe a traffic light is just the answer.

mdot is just stalling and using funds and studies as a excuse not to do anything.

i was saying tonite that if several groups pulled some resourses together and offered to pay for a light there, mdot would jump on the band wagon then.

im thinking that any studies that have been done on this intersection is much out dated and need to be rethought out. maybe they need to have someone sitting on the corner and watching it for a day and see just what goes on there.

I wish beind a defensive driver was the answer to this corner but it isn't. Some times no matter how defensive of a driver you are you can't avoid an accident. Just yesterday 2 drivers pulled right out in front of my husband. He was on 115 and the drivers rolled the stop to turn left from 37 to 115. He avoided them but just by inches. This corner needs a light. We travel to Cadillac 4 times a week for school and feel this is the most dangerous part of our trip. I would donate to a fund to help install a light at this corner. The next time you are at that corner note the cross...

Intersection of 115 & 37 in Mesick

Posted by Kerry Trethewy, Buckley - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 9:04 p.m.

I've seen many almost accidents at that intersection as well. The speed limit should be lowered. Some drivers coming into Mesick on 115 have been in fatal accidents going through the intersection because drivers on 37 are too impatient to wait for the traffic to clear. When watching cars turning onto 115 many cars go ahead and turn left from 37 without actually seeing if other cars are going through the intersection. Some times large trucks block the uncoming cars. There was a deadly accident in August when a camper pulled out onto 115 and two motorcycles crashed into the camper because the camper didn't see them coming. Motorists need to be more careful and more patient in waiting for traffic to clear

too many hurt

Posted by Evelyn Edwards, Mesick - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

over the years I've seen more and more accident's on this corner, like everyone has. MDOT has NO idea, the cost? the light wouldn't have to run 24/7 they don't in TC or Cadillac. Maybe MDOT would find the money, IF they really wanted to, or maybe the next time someone is hurt or killed, the family should sue MDOT since they KNOW it's a problem, And yes I agree it should be up to the town to know wether a traffic light is needed not MDOT

deadly MDOT callousness

Posted by Mike Nicholls, Lake Ann - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:45 p.m.

That intersection is absurdly dangerous. In general intersections at odd angles (not 90 degree) cause sight line problems. This particular intersection is a major truck route, is right next to the Mesick school, and has too high of a speed limit on 115 - you have a recipie for disaster.
Shame on the MDOT spokesperson for such a callous and absolutely incorrect comment. People are being killed and maimed out there.

RACH

Posted by RICHELLE SZEGDA, MESICK - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:41 p.m.

THERE DOSE NEED TO BE A LIGHT-I TRAVEL THIS ROAD WAY EVERY DAY. IT IS THE PROBLEM OF TURNING RIGHT ON TO 37-N - 115 TRAFFIC GOING INTO MESICK AND THE PEOPLE TURNING LEFT TO CADILLAC. I HAVE SEEN CARS WEAVE IN AND OUT OF THAT TO AVOID A CRASH. ALSO IF THERE ISNT ANY MONEY FOR A LIGHT TELL THAT TO FAMILY THAT JUST LOST 2 PEOPLE AT THE CORNER IN AUG. I HOPE THIS HELPS.

Remind me again...

...do they sell donuts at this intersection?

Sad state of drivers

Posted by J Kowalski, Mesick, MI - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:32 p.m.

Drivers are geeting more ignorant every year. The problem is they don't know what a flashing red or flashing yellow light means. In other areas I have seen the solar-powered speed radar signs that show you how fast you are going, but that wouldn't help here. There should be a full-on stoplight (red, yellow, green). It should be green for the main traffic flow, and have sensors for the lesser used road to trigger a red light for the main thoroughfare.

Bob Sais Defensive driving is Key...

Posted by Bob S, Harrietta - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:28 p.m.

Defensive driving is a method of driving that minimizes the number of driving risks, using more advanced skills than just your basic training. When you employ defensive driving techniques, you become a better, safer, and smarter driver?one who is better prepared for the hazards ahead.

Check the internet for the defensive driving courses near you. You can also take the courses online. Enjoy and be safe!

Dangerous intersection

Posted by S Boudot, Traverse City - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 6:19 p.m.

I agree that danger exists at this intersection; unfortunately people have to die before changes occur.

I'd like to draw attention to another dangerous intersection in the Traverse City area; Secor Rd and Silver Lake Rd.

MDOT numbers, HA HA

Posted by Bob Phelps, Traverse City - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 5:41 p.m.

MDOT numbers mean the counties that would be responding to accidents in a certain area, have not had a high enough expense for body bags yet. They said the same thing about a signal at 37S & meadowlane Dr., the trucks just get up the hill & they may have to stop. It wasn't a problem at the top of the hill off Cass Rd., on S. airport @ Veterans Dr., all it took was the mall & developer money!!

Funding

Posted by Jayne S., TVC - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 5:19 p.m.

If MDOT isn't going to step up, has Mesick looked into funding a traffic light themselves?

Source of funds?

Posted by K P, Traverse City - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 5:18 p.m.

If rolling stops are the concern and happen so frequently, why isn't law enforcement out there enforcing the rules? It sounds like easy money and a place where if the MDOT won't act, the law should.

seriously?

Posted by Amber Pelton, traverse city - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 4:13 p.m.

Maybe people need to follow the traffic laws and actually STOP at a STOP SIGN and red blinking light. If you aren't sure what those things mean then maybe you shouldn't drive.

Only accident I've had in 35 years.

Posted by Don Byers, Wil'burg - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 4:10 p.m.

Well over safe speed for a turn a guy drove right into me as I sat at the stop sign.
Cars traveling too fast from 3 directions. It also is an intersection with a lot traffic.

Traffic Light @ 115 and 37

Posted by Jennefer Keber, Interlochen - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 2:15 p.m.

People that live in the area know would know more than MDOT when it comes to safety at the intersection. If you drive though an area everyday no matter what the time and it is a growing problem then they (MDOT) should acknowledge that there is a problem. They can't just sit there for a couple of days and call it good. I believe there should be a local voting on the issue. If the public says there needs to be something done then they should be allowed to give their feedback on the issue instead of just blown off by being told it's the drivers responsibility to be more careful. Everyone in the city could be perfect drivers and all it takes is one idiot to hurt others with their careless driving.

This needs to be fixed!

Posted by a m, wexford-benzie daily - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 2:13 p.m.

I drive this strech of road twice a day and it is terrible! I have had close calls as well. The cars turning onto 115 don't stop and some don't even pause. I have had cars pull out in front of me while traveling in both directions. I think that MDOT saying something along the lines of; we need to take care while driving, is not practical for this intersection. I am a very careful driver but I have to slam on my brakes or avoid the people that are in too big of a hurry to stop.
I suggest that MDOT install a traffic light here. They have the power to make it a funtioning traffic light during heavy traffic periods and a flashing light during low traffic periods. How many more times am I going to have to slam on my brakes? How many more accidents is it going to take before they fix this?

How many must die?

Posted by t galoi, tc - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 1:45 p.m.

DOT: How many must die at an intersection before you act? Is there a specific number?
