People from across the region and around the country visit Traverse City's waterfront. And it has come a long way from when it was home to industry and power plants.

But Traverse City's new mayor is proposing big changes to the bay front that come with a big price tag.

The details are tonight's Fact Finder Report.

It's about a mile stretch of land along West Grand Traverse Bay. There's not much there but beach, open space, and what's left of the former zoo.

But Traverse City's new mayor is asking if it could be something more.

Chris Bzdok says, "Do you want the waterfront to sit empty here, the zoo sit empty, or do you want things to do here now?"

While he says all ideas are on the table, he does have a starting point. The "Your Bay Your Say" project that was several years in the making with final plans presented in 2007

Bzdok says, "It seems people, for years have wanted things to do down here, so that's an important part of the proposal as well. The safe crossing of the highway, enhancements to the beach areas, a central park on the zoo and leaving the open space open for views and throwing the Frisbee, that sort of thing."

But making those changes will mean spending some money. Bzdok is proposing up to three million dollars. And he's suggesting it come from the city's Brownbridge Trust Fund. A 12 million dollar fund from oil and gas revenues on city owned property.

Bzdok says, "It is a responsible use of money because we're not raising anybody's taxes, we're not talking about millages. We're talking about using an asset set aside for recreational purposes on recreational amenities that have been planned for 4-5 years."

And while some people say we should be careful with our money in this economy, Bzdok says now is actually a good time to invest in a project like this because he says the dollar can go a lot farther now than it might in the future. But he says there's a more important reason to move forward with this project now.

Bzdok says, "I think now is the time because we face a choice. we can nibble away at this for 10-15-20 years and everybody in the city that has kids can see their kids in college before it's done and essentially the next generation can enjoy these amenities that are called for or we can say we have assets we want to invest in them in amenities for the people of the city and visitors to the city and we want that now."

Bzdok says, "This property here is arguably the most valuable per square foot property that we have in the city and it's being used for storage right now and not much else. There are lots of things that could be done and there are a lot of things people can do down here."

Many people outside of Traverse City use this area and would be impacted by any changes, but because this proposal involves Brownbridge trust fund money, it's up to Traverse City voters to approve it. Bzdok expects the earliest it could be on the ballot would be in August.

But you can weigh in on the idea now. What do you think about the plan?

OPEN SPACES. OPEN SPACES. OPEN SPACES.
What is the hurry? Is the bay going somewhere?
Get the boats out of the swimming beach areas. They are a real eyesore. If you want peole to use the water don't make them compete with boats and the boaters parties which give visitors a poor impression of our area. Send the stink and noise out to Bower's Harbor and let them hang out there.

Way to go!

Waterfront

I'd like to see an area of the water next to the open space turned into a free public outside ice skating rink during the winter months and a spot made for a warming fire, hot chocolate concession, a few benches for resting. Also, more clean restrooms are needed there and downtown.

Leave the Open Space Open

I live in a neighborhood adjacent to the Open Space and appreciate it for what it is, an open space. It is a reclaimed natural beauty that we in our tax-paying neighbohood enjoy.

Boating is part of Traverse City

Baoting has been part of the history of Traverse City for well over 100yrs. It would be a foolish mistake to restrict this leisurely pass time. Traverse City Draws many people here just for the boating. You would be a foll to think that all the hotel rooms on the area are filled only with people that do not boat. May Bring theirs with them.

But we all know are new Mayor has an agenda to restrict and push boating tourists out of Traverse City. Such a shame, at a time when we need people that have money to spend to come to the area.

Bay Front Needs:
New and clean bathrooms at at least 4 locations.

Permanent trash receptacles with recycling EVERYWHERE!.

A permanent vender area possible two and a Farm market area.

Life Guards at all swim area's is a must for safety.

Permanent Tables in various locations along the beach, how about some benches too.

I ran against Cris for the interim job of City Commissioner. I am happy that he is mayor. He has a good new clean vision of the future for Traverse City.
R. Floyd Clinch and Con Foster had the same type of vision when they cleaned up the waterfront and created a beach with $10,000.00 in 1925. What good is the Brown Bridge Fund money if the people of the City of Traverse City cannot enjoy the single most important aspect of the City without improvements? Yes, I am in favor of this progressive change. Obviously we don't need a stupid sculpture in the open space the same as we don't need boats parked all summer in front of the volley ball court. But, we should take the land that Gerry Greene and my uncle "Buck" Williams were able to get back from the railroad, the power plant, and the offices that blocked the view and go on with Gerry Greene and "Buck" Williams vision of an open space with areas of use for everyone. Have you seen the nice new area in Charlevoix with the concert park? We could have an area where we showcase our own musical talent combined with the restaurants culinary skills. Look at what they did in New Orleans at the French Quarter Festival. We could have a small blues, folk, jazz festival every weekend in the summer.. with food..and entertainment. Or showcase our fruit and local beers and wines with some music. We could advocate camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and such at a local event with a back to nature theme. Every weekend we could show off the farming, area, talent, culinary skills, etc at the edge of our bay and bring in some people who will spend money. Change is a positive thing people. Have you ever thought of having the farmer's market moved to Hickory Hills in the Oleson Farm Squash Valley as a permanent location? Have you ever thought of making it possible to bypass Traverse City with a four lane road going east of Chums Corners and over Beitner Park to Hammond? Have you ever thought of making Cherry Festival in the middle of July so our fruit is ripe? Some day, Traverse City, you will have to wake up to the possibilities of change. The infastructure of the town is crumbling because we cannot annex Garfield Township, East Bay, and Elmwood... yet this is all one city. It is sad how stupid most of the squabbling is that keeps the same traffic mess, lack of tax base to improve the quality of life, and lack of vision to make change in this city. I am one hundred percent behind Cris and his ideas. However, I got so sick of the same old same old, that I left town after changing the police noise pollution code, putting the bike path through my property, and making Fulton Park something that we can all use. Here we go again

If you will remember, the citizens of Traverse City clearly supported the tear down of Darrow's Marina, Parsons Corp., Lumber Dealer's Warehouse, Stiffler's Architectural Office, Hanna & Lay Lumber & Coal, and the Power Plant, to create an open space. Then we named it "The Open Space" because that is what came out of city wide forums, that date back to the early 60's - and probably before. It was clearly debated, ad nauseam, and the majority of the participants wanted an open space, not view obstructing structures. The construction of the bath house at the end of Division Street was not without controversy. The construction of any structure in our "open space" must be carefully thought out, approved by the citizens, and not be an knee jerk reaction.

spending that much money will not " entice " more outside people or tourists to come to the bay area ... people come here already because they love the area and they dont need a " disneyland atmosphere " to have more fun !! dr

Past Chairman, Bayfront Planning Committee

As the last Chairman of the Bayfront PLanning Committe I ehthusiastically endrose the Mayor's proposal. We were asked to come up with a plan, and the citizens spent thousands of hours to do just that. Now it's time to implement some of those ideas.

Go baby Go

Right on!!!

Enough of this falderal! Make a move already. We could be in committee hell for the next 10 years and end up at the same place. And ten years from now it will cost 5 times as much. At least somebody is willing to say Go!
