GRAND TRAVERSE BAY -- Researchers are taking note of an important new data collection in Grand Traverse Bay. The thermistor buoy is located North of Old Mission Peninsula and is the first of its kind in the bay.
The buoy is providing temperature data for research and monitoring. It records temperature at eight depths below the surface at six-minute intervals. it will remain in position for the next few weeks for evaluation and testing, and will be re-deployed next spring.
It was deployed through a partnership between Northwestern Michigan College, the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and the University of Michigan. The $13,000 cost was covered by a grant from the Grand Traverse Band to NMC's Water Studies Institute.
NMC contracted U of M's Marine Hydrodynamics Laboratories to design and build the buoy.
