KALKASKA -- The halls of Northland Shopping Center in Kalkaska are already being decked in lights, tinsel, toys and ornaments in preparation for Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resource's 13th annual Festival of Trees.
This year, 32 decorated Christmas trees along with other items will be raffled and auctioned off during the event, which runs from Saturday November 14th through November 22nd. Organizers say more of the trees have been donated and decorated by individuals and area businesses than in years past. Santa will be on hand on the final day for pictures with kids and to help chose the raffle winners.
The event will raise money for KAIR. The organization operates a food pantry and will be assembling Christmas baskets later this season. Around 300 Christmas baskets are planned for this year, up from 250 in 2008. Marilyn Coville, KAIR Coordinator for the Festival, says around 800 people visit the food pantry every month and the need continues to grow.
